GIRL POWER FOR CHANGE MAKES STRIDES

Girl Power for Change, a local organisation in Lilongwe, is transforming the lives of young girls in schools in the country, providing them with the tools and support needed to succeed.

Through their “Empower to Transform” project, the organisation has distributed 500 reusable sanitary pads to girls at Yepa Primary School, thanks to support from Thaman Aviation Company.

Linda Phiri, who is the founder of the organisation has told Projectm that this initiative aims at reducing absenteeism and dropouts due to menstrual-related issues, promoting education and dignity.

“Apart from that, we also pay for school for the less-privileged and orphans, Currently, I have made it my mission to keep every girl in school. It pains me to see a bright girl withdrawing from school and get pregnant due to lack of fees,” said Phiri

In addition to providing essential materials, the organisation has also started conducting regular mentorship sessions in primary and secondary schools.

These sessions cover crucial topics such as goal setting, gender equality, HIV and AIDS awareness, and sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

Currently, the organisation’s efforts are yielding positive results, with more girls staying in school and pursuing their dreams.

‘I am dedicated to empowering girls and transforming communities, it is my dream to see girls becoming great leaders and pursuing their education,” added Phiri.

Meanwhile, Girl Power for Change has made a tangible impact in Lilongwe, inspiring a brighter future for its youth.
