Chitipa-based female electric engineer, Patricia Nyirenda is defying the odds by creating a niche in an otherwise male-dominated profession.
The 28, is a holder of advanced certificate in electrical installation and electronics obtained in 2021 at Miracle Technical Institute in Karonga district.
She has told ProjectM in an interview that soon after graduating, she went back to her home village, Chisenga, where she established her electrical installation firm.
“Using the knowledge I acquired from school, I decided not to wait for formal employment but rather focus on finding my own path,” Nyirenda said.
Her inspiration came from her fellow youthful entrepreneurs who she said are able to make money on a daily basis unlike those who opted for formal employment who she said are only receiving payment once a month.
“In this job, we receive money soon after completing our work unlike other professions where you have to wait for month end,” said Nyirenda.
Through her profession, she is financially independent and supports herself.
“I am able to buy stuff that a person needs on a daily basis, which is of course vital in the modern economy,” she added.
Asked on whether she doesn’t feel intimidated by male electricians, Nyirenda said people around her community have confidence in her.
Women rights activist Memory Chisenga has said Nyirenda as an exciting woman who needs support to further her career.
“Women like her need support so that other girls must realize that some professions are not only meant for men,” she said.
Among others, Nyirenda is a professional fault assessor, electricity wiring installer and home appliance professional repairer
