Lilongwe-based fashion designer Jayne Binali has launched an ambitious project called “Free school uniform project” aimed at providing less-privileged children in Lilongwe with school uniform and learning materials.
The founder and director of a fashion designing company called Jay’s Apparels based in Area 49, says she has also launched the initiative to fulfil her vision of helping the less-privileged.
She has told ProjectM in an interview that she hopes to make a significant contribution towards education and social well-being of children in need.
“I am a tailor and tailoring and designing is my area of expertise which I feel I can extend and reach out to children in need,” said Binali.
Through the initiative, at least 1000 children are expected to benefit.
Binali has since appealed to organisations and other stakeholders to support her fulfil her initiative.
“Personally, I have contributed a reasonable amount of money towards this project with over 30 learners personally benefiting from me,” said Binali.
She has since indicated that her plan is to see the initiative extend to other areas across the country.
Meanwhile, child rights campaigner Rabson Woodwell has commended Binali for the initiative, saying it will boast the performance of learners.
“This initiative has the potential to boost growth of education in targeted areas because less-privileged children will not suffer from the stigma that comes with poverty,” said Woodwell.
