As one way of improving match officiations in the country, The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has launched a project targeting potential referees from young tertiary students.
The Association has since advertised for Refereeing Grade 3 training targeting tertiary students only.
Speaking in an interview FAM Referees Development Manager Fredrick Khoropa said the aim is to fill the existing gap left that is left by referees that have retired.
“As a nation there is need for training more referees to make sure that the number we have is maintained because we some are retiring due to age”, he said.
Khoropa said the Referees have a very important role and must be able to control and interpret the laws of the game, which are written in English thus the need to have referees who are well equipped.
“By targeting tertiary students, we also aim to raise the standard of refereeing in Malawi and ensure that the country can produce officials who keep up with international referees demand,” he explained.
According to FAM, university students with passion for sports, not more than the age of 25, ready to undergo a fitness are eligible to undergo the training.
Potential referees will also be required to pay a fee of K10,000 for the training.
