Mzuzu-based entrepreneur Nickson Nkhoma is contributing waste management and environmental conservation in Mzuzu through his company, N.M.N Eco-Friendly Company which makes briquettes.
Founded in December 2023, N.M.N Eco-Friendly Company produces briquettes as an alternative energy source to charcoal, addressing deforestation and poor waste management in the city.
Nkhoma’s inspiration stems from witnessing the devastating effects of deforestation and waste dumping in Mzuzu.
“We collect sawdust, typically discarded and transform it into eco-friendly briquettes. This reduces waste and provides a sustainable energy source, cheaper than charcoal,” said Nkhoma.
Currently, the 30-year-old is manually producing briquettes through the Zantchito Programme, facilitated by Emerge Livelihood (formerly Mzuzu E-Hub), a company supporting up-and-coming entrepreneurs.
With pending funding from the European Union, Nkhoma aims at increasing production and expand the market.
“I have produced 40kgs so far and once funding is secured, I will scale up and perfect the product,” he said.
Environmental activist Maloto Chinkombero praised Nkhoma’s initiative the innovative approach is a beacon of hope in Malawi’s fight against deforestation and climate change.
“By any means, we have to promote and encourage sustainable energy sources. We can protect our forests and ensure a healthier environment for future generations,” said Chinkombero.
N.M.N Eco-Friendly Company’s mission aligns with Malawi’s environmental conservation efforts, promoting affordable and clean energy for the community.
