Empowering Malawi’s Vulnerable Youth

A newly established nonprofit organization, Mama Afrika Child Foundation, is making a significant impact in the Lilongwe District of Malawi, providing critical support to vulnerable children.

Founded by a 19 year old Jacqueline Mwale, also known as Mama Afrika, the organization focuses on addressing the needs of children from impoverished backgrounds, especially those in child-headed households.

Established in 2024, the foundation’s mission is simple but powerful: to provide food, care, and support to children in need, empowering them to pursue education, live healthily, and grow into responsible, productive citizens.

Mwale told ProjectM that her organisation  is driven by a deep commitment to child development, aiming to equip children young people with the resources they need to overcome adversity.

“We believe every child deserves a chance to thrive. Through our programs, we’re giving children the opportunity to not only survive but to succeed, despite the difficulties they face in their everyday lives.” she said.

The foundation has made strides in its first year, providing food security, educational support, and health care to children in the district.

Approximately 100 children have been reached, with 50 currently registered in the organization’s care. The children receive regular meals, access to education, and guidance on health and hygiene practices.

The primary focus of the Mama Afrika Child Foundation is its commitment to assisting children in child-headed households, where young people are forced to take on adult responsibilities due to the loss of parents or caregivers.

These children often face significant barriers to education and access to basic needs like food and healthcare.

The organization works closely with local schools, community leaders, and organizations to identify children in need and offer consistent, sustainable support. The Foundation’s programs also encourage behavioral development, helping children adopt values of respect, responsibility, and good citizenship.

“Our work is not just about providing food and supplies.  It’s about helping these children become leaders and agents of change in their communities. We want them to grow up strong, educated, and ready to contribute to society.” She said.

Looking to the future, Mama Afrika Child Foundation aims to expand its reach, scaling its programs to support more children across Malawi.

Plans include increasing food distribution efforts, broadening educational outreach, and building stronger partnerships to ensure long-term funding and resources.

As the Foundation grows, it remains committed to its mission and is calling on donors, volunteers, and partners to support the cause.

The organization’s efforts rely on community and international partnerships to sustain and expand its impact.

“We are passionate about giving hope to these children and building a better future for them. But we can’t do it alone. We need the support of people who share our vision of a brighter, more equitable future for every child.” She explained.
