EDWARD NYAMWERA: A PASSIONATE MULTI-FACETED PERSONALITY

Amid calls for youths to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship to maximize economic gains, 24 year-old Edward Nyamwera has fully embraced the call by venturing into art.

Nyamwera, a Biomedical science graduate and currently working with Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre has found another niche in art.

During holidays, Nyamwera spends his time in his home district Nkhatabay, working on old wrappers (chitenje) and other clothes making flower pots using sand and cement.

“I also started making beautiful coffee tables using sand and cement and this made me to discover more,” Nyamwera said.

The genesis of his art dates back to few years ago when he used to spend most of his time at Lake Malawi collecting stone pebbles.

“Later, I discovered that the pebbles I used to collect can be turned into something beautiful and that’s when I started working my magic on them,” said Nyamwera.

The artist makes stone sculptures and other art materials.

He has since managed to penetrate the local and international markets, selling artworks to local hotels, tourists and offices.

“I have collaborated with other high profile artists in Malawi and exhibited my artwork at Amaryllis hotel in Blantyre,” he added.

Through his business Nyamwera has managed to employ 2 people.

Nyamwera’s vision is to see his business employ more youths.

Bridget Manda, Nkhatabay-based art enthusiast has described Nyamwera’s art as beautiful.
