The Centre for Social Accountability and Transparency (CSAT) has convened a workshop for community journalists from the northern region to enhance their understanding of the Parliamentary Support Programme.
Funded by USAID through Democracy International, the program aims to promote transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in Malawi’s Parliamentary processes.
“Community journalists play a vital role in shaping public opinion and promoting civic education. We want to empower them to effectively disseminate information about the programme’s impact and interventions,” said Moffat Mpweya Phiri a citizen engagement manager.
The workshop focused on the ideal Parliament concept, highlighting gaps in public understanding of Parliamentary roles and satisfaction with its performance.
CSAT plans to launch a nationwide campaign in 2025 to strengthen Malawi’s Parliament and raise awareness about its importance.
“We will utilise various media platforms and engage civil society to promote citizen understanding and participation,” Mpweya Phiri added.
Dumisani Tembo, a participant, praised the training calling it an eye opener.
“This workshop is significant for us as media practitioners, with accurate knowledge, we can effectively inform the public and advocate for accountability from Members of Parliament and other officials,” said Tembo.
The campaign will run from January to August 2025.
