Crafting Success with Sparks

Leo Maloya, also known as Lomwe Prince, is a multifaceted individual with a passion for music, tailoring, and welding.

While his musical and tailoring endeavors continue to shape his identity, it is his welding business that is paving the way for his success.

What began as a childhood fascination with fixing and building things has evolved into a thriving business, catering to individuals and aiming to attract large companies.

“I have always loved working with my hands,” Leo says with a smile. “As a child, I would bend wires to create toy cars, straighten metals, and build small things. I never knew this passion would one day become a business.”

Three and a half years ago, Leo decided to turn his natural talent into a source of income.

After exploring various ways to earn a living, he realised that welding offered a unique combination of creativity and financial stability.

“I saw that there was money in this business,” he explains. “When I noticed how other welders were growing, I knew I could succeed too if I worked hard. Plus, it’s something I’ve loved doing since I was young, so it didn’t feel like work.”

Leo’s business specialises in crafting bespoke beds, chairs, gates, dining tables, stools, door protectors, and more.

He customizes every product to meet his customers’ unique needs and is always eager to learn new designs.

Like any business, welding comes with its challenges. One of the main difficulties Leo faces is competition from welders who offer lower prices by using substandard materials.

While some customers are tempted by these cheaper options, Leo remains committed to delivering high-quality work that lasts.

“We don’t cut corners,” he emphasises. “When a customer comes to us, we ensure they get value for their money. Some people opt for cheaper welders, but their products break down quickly. For me, when a customer returns, I want it to be for new work, not to fix a mistake.”

Another challenge is earning customer trust, especially when large sums of money are involved for materials. To address this, Leo ensures that all transactions are transparent.

“When a client gives us money for materials, we provide receipts,” he says. “This builds trust and proves that we are using their money responsibly. Without transparency, misunderstandings can happen, and that’s bad for business.”

Despite not attending formal welding school, Leo’s skills are exceptional.

He learned by observing and working with other experienced welders, combined with his innate talent.

He also prioritises safety for himself and his team, ensuring they use protective gear like safety glasses, gloves, and boots while working with hazardous equipment.

“Welding can be risky,” he admits. “We always make sure to follow safety measures. It’s essential to protect yourself while delivering good work.”

While most of his customers are individuals, Leo is working toward expanding his business to serve larger companies. With a dedicated team supporting him, he is optimistic about the future.

“My dream is to work with big companies,” he says. “I believe that with hard work and honesty, we will get there.”

His advice to aspiring welders is straightforward: “Be honest, work hard, and prioritise customer trust. If you handle money responsibly and deliver quality work, your business will grow.”
