Frequent outbreaks of waterborne diseases have troubled Kafumbula Village in Lilongwe. But with the installation of a new borehole by African Enterprise Malawi (AEM), the community finally has a solution flowing right beneath their feet.
The borehole, officially handed over by AEM under its Social Action Program, is set to transform the lives of over 5,000 people from six surrounding villages.
For a community that has relied on unsafe water sources for years, this development brings new hope for better health, hygiene and dignity.
Victoria Ntonga, AEM’s Social Action and Resource Mobilisation Manager, said the organisation’s mission goes beyond preaching the gospel, it includes demonstrating God’s love through tangible acts of service.
“We believe in faith in action. Access to clean and safe water is a fundamental right, and we’re committed to addressing the practical needs of communities we serve,” said Ntonga during the handover ceremony.
Village Headman Kafumbula could not hide his joy. He praised AEM for the support, describing the borehole as a long-awaited answer to their prayers.
“Many people here have suffered from preventable diseases due to dirty water. This borehole will help us live healthier lives, especially our children and the elderly,” he said.
The Social Action Programme, through which this borehole was provided, is funded by Australian Aid and Development. It aims to improve community well-being by addressing basic needs such as water, sanitation and hygiene.
For the people of Kafumbula Village, the days of walking long distances to unsafe water sources are over. Clean, safe water is now just a few steps away, and with it comes the promise of a healthier future.
