Local charity organisation, Foundation for Community and Capacity Development (FOCCAD) in partnership with CARE Malawi, has launched a special project called “Dreams”, aimed at promoting community resilience and livelihoods during emergencies for vulnerable families in Thyolo district.
Through the initiative, the organization is tackling El Nino-induced hunger with unconditional cash transfers to vulnerable families.
FOCCAD executive director Dan Nthara has indicated that the organisation has set aside funds of up to K647.1 million to support 3,150 vulnerable households in the area of Traditional Authority Changata and Kapichi.
“We are giving out cash transfers of up to K50,000 per household, a process which last up to March 2025,” said Nthara.
He said additionally, 225 households with under-five children, pregnant and lactating women will receive a nutritional top up of K19,000 each for four months.
“Up to 3,150 households have already received their 2 month allocations, marking a significant step in this project,” said Nthara.
The organisation has since urged beneficiaries under the project to use the money prudently.
“We hope through this initiative, we are going to strengthen resilience and foster recovery in the communities,” he added.
One of the beneficiaries, Movirikana Dube, has commended FOCCAD for coming up with the initiative, saying it is timely.
“I was among hundreds of people whose crop fields did not perform well due to the drought which hit last year and this financial help will help us a lot,” said Dube.
