CAF WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE COSAFA QUALIFIERS TOURNAMENT KICKS OFF

The battle for a spot in the CAF Women’s Champions League rolls into action from Thursday at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre with eight teams set for the competition.

Malawi’s sole representative in the tournament Ascent Academy have been drawn into group B alongside Uniao Desportiva de Lichinga from Mozambique, Gaborone United Ladies of Botswana and Young Buffaloes of E-swatini.

Group A is made up of University of Western Cape (UWC), from South Africa, Green Buffaloes (Zambia), Herentals Queens (Zimbabwe), and FC Ongos Ladies (Namibia).

Recently, the Council of Southern Africa Football Association (Cosafa) qualifiers Local Organizing Committee Chairperson Felister Dossi said Malawi will host the eight-team tournament between 15-24 August.

The two top sides from each group will proceed to the Semi-Finals and winners will join South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns women as representatives of Cosafa in Egypt for the continental showpiece later this year.

The ultimate showdown kicks off with teams from group A opening the tournament.

Zimbabwe’s representative Herentals Queens FC play their opening match against FC Ongos of Namibia in an early kick off while University of the Western Cape (UWC) From South Africa will face Zambia’s Green Buffaloes later in the day

Meanwhile, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says soccer fans in the country will watch the CAF Women’s Club Championship for free as a way of inspiring more girls to join women’s football.
