Bravehearts men’s and women’s basketball teams did Malawi proud by winning gold and silver respectively at a three-nation in Lusaka, Zambia.
The Under-20 also reached the final and won silver after loosing to Ilanda.
The Lusaka for Bridging Sports Foundation tournament, organised by a US firm, featured teams from Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
Bravehearts coach and sponsor Griffin Kalua said Bravehearts men reached the semifinals after an impressive performance on Friday. They beat Matero Magic to reach the final in which they beat Matero Warrior 71-50 to win gold.
The women’s team also Zimbabwe’s Napsa and Lady Lynx to reach the final but fell to Zambia’s Green Buffaloes 43-40 in a close contest.
Commenting on the performance, Kalua said he was impressed with the result considering that their counterparts are exposed.
“With the right approach, determination, commitment and passion, anything is possible. Last year, our men’s team qualified for elite 16 NBA Fiba Basketball League in Kenya.
“This is something for the first time in Malawi’s basketball. Last week, all our four teams from our youth teams to senior teams won Central Zone Basketball championships. Now, a week later all three teams finals in Zambia where we have never win a tropgt before only a silver medal. So, this is beyond amazing for us. All glory to God.”
Kalua said the men’s team received an equivalent of K4 million while Fahad Billy added the icing on the cake by being named Most Valuable Player and got an equivalent K300,000.
