In a bid to foster innovation at Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), a USA-based biotech firm, PainSolvr LLC and Sustainalutions LTD has donated equipment for production of briquettes.
PainSolvr LLC and Sustainalutions LTD produce local charcoal briquettes from human wastes, soil remediation and crop irrigation.
Speaking in an interview during the donation, Austin Turner and Alec Prieto Co-founders of the company stressed that they want to create sustainable ways of gaining economy while addressing environmental, economic and public health challenges.
He said: “This package will not only benefit MUST students but it will also address issues of deforestation and diseases such as Cholera and Typhoid fever, diseases that are spread due to poor defecation which are disposed poorly. We also provide agricultural solutions such fertilizer from human waste which will be a benefit to small holder farmers.”
In his remarks, MUST’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Wilson Mandala hailed the firm for the donation, saying it will equip students with necessary skills.
He said: “The students will be exposed to new ways of addressing challenges that have rocked the country using human wastes. Each of this equipment will promote sustainable manufacturing contributing to a sustainable future.
“The donation is a timely one as it will also help in promoting entrepreneurship, innovation and providing employment opportunities to graduates.”
Apart from the donation, the company will also be trained in making briquettes using human waste.
