BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF MALAWI ELECTS NEW COMMITTEE

Former Malawi Olympic Committee President Oscar Kanjale has returned to sports administration following his election as Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) president.

The former basketball player and Basmal president was elected unopposed on Sunday during the elections at MOC offices in Lilongwe.

Kanjala was elected alongside vice-president Banthari Banda, general secretary Peter Gomani, vice-general secretary Eddah Nkombezi, treasurer Thokozani Kamangira, technical director Hope Chisamanga, women’s director Pamela Kudiwa and marketing and resource mobilisation director Ntchiwi Chiwaya.

In his remarks, Kanjala said his election signaled a new chapter for the association’s revival.

they will not rush the national teams into international participation until there is great improvement in local basketball standards.

He said this on Sunday as he assumed the hot-seat unopposed during the body’s assembly at the Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) offices in Lilongwe.

Kanjala also hinted that his administration would not rush to compete in international tournaments until they are convinced that they have strong teams.

Malawi National Council of Sports spokesperson Edgar Ntulumbwa said the elections were free and fair.

However, he bemoaned the trend of having officials elected unopposed.

But on Kanjala’s position Ntulumbwa said his opponent Daud Hussein did not meet the minimum requirements such as a bachelor’s degree and a sports management qualification.
