ATHLETICS MALAWI TO HOST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Athletics Malawi has disclosed that it will on Saturday host the senior and junior track and field regional championships in three regions in all the three regions across the country.

The venues include Chirunga Stadium in Zomba for Southern Region, Dedza Stadium in Dedza for Central Region and Thumbi ground in Mzimba for Northern Region.

The regional games are aimed at identifying and promoting young talents which will be used for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) scheduled for Namibia in 2025.

Speaking in an interview General Secretary for Athletics Association of Malawi, Nicholas Kanyenda said he is looking forward to seeing young talents showcasing their skills.

“We have a lot of talents out there and the only way we can be exposed to such talents is through such meetings even as we aim to select players for the coming games,” he explained.

In 2022, Malawi hosted the games at Bingu International Stadium with at least 2500 international athletes participating in football, netball, volleyball, judo, swimming, among others.

During the 2022 AUSC, Malawi was in position six having earned 44 medals, eight in gold medals, 10 bronze and 26 silver.

The young Malawian athletes brought home two gold medals, 10 silver medals and 18 bronze medals from five sporting disciplines namely taekwondo, judo, netball, boxing and football.
