ATHLETES LEAVE FOR ALL AFRICA GAMES

Versatile athlete Asimenye Simwaka and Stern Lifa are among 10 athletes who left the country for the All Africa Games scheduled for 8 to 23 March in Accra, Ghana.

Other athletes are Elias Bonzo and Lewis Zakeyu (boxing), Luka Smit and Tayamika Chang’anamuno (swimming), Chikondi Kathewera and Olivia Chikwapula (judo), and Vesta Banda and Joseph Phiri (taekwondo).

In 2021, the duo made history by becoming the first local athletes to qualify for the 2021 Senior African Championship in Algeria.

In 2023, Asimenye was ranked sixth in Africa out of 76 in the 400-metre category in the global ranking where athletes score based on combination of results

Speaking with ProjectM in an interview, she said she is optimistic that she will perform great.

“The preparations for the games went well and I am excited to be part of the games. I will make sure that I work hard so that I qualify for the Olympic Games scheduled for August in Paris,” said Asimenye.

Athletics Malawi Secretary General Nicholas Nyirenda said Simwaka qualified having achieved a remarkable performance in 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter.

“She clocked 11.27 against the qualifying standard of 11.70 in 100 metres. Clocked 23.27 against the entry standard of 24 seconds in the 200 metre and 52:82 seconds against 54.6 seconds in the 400 metres,” he said.

Asimenye’s coach Pachisi Nyasulu said he was hopeful that he would put up a great performance.

“The preparations have been so great and she is very strong and fit for the games,” he said.

All the athletes have a chance to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris should they do well.
