In a heart-warming show of community support, Mama Amina Foundation a local non-profit organization, with support from Light Foundation in UK has donated 48 wheelchairs to individuals with mobility challenges in Likoma.
The donation is part of an ongoing effort to improve the lives of those in need of mobility assistance.
The wheelchairs, valued at K12 million have been distributed to recipients of Likoma and some health facilities.
Speaking in an interview Director for Mama Amina Foundation Hassan Abdul Malick said mobility is critical component of someone’s life.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer this essential support to people in our community. The wheel chairs will not only improve their mobility but also promote independence and inclusion to people in various communities for a more and fulfilled life because having one can make a difference”, she said.
On his part representative for St Peters Hospital Mathias Londo has hailed the organisation for the donation.
“We are thankful for this timely donation because some patients struggled with mobility whenever they wanted to visit the hospital but now their lives will be improved*, he said.
On her part, Luwiza Kameza, a 28-year-old woman who is a beneficiary expressed excitement for the donation.
From the 48 chairs, 15 have been donated to St Peters Mission Hospital, 24 at Chima Health Centre 9 at St Mary’s Health Centre in Chizumulu Island.
Giving is part of this year’s act of generosity where the organisation has partnered with different organisations to address critical challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.
