Martin Anthony, a 29-year-old graduate from the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), has embarked on a mission to revolutionize the agro-processing industry in Malawi.
His company, Nyasa Agro-Machinery Design and Fabrication CO. Limited, aims to provide affordable and better machines for small and medium scale farmers.
“I grew up in deep rural Malawi, and I often witnessed the struggles that small and medium scale farmers face,” Anthony said.
“They do farming operations manually, and in the process, they have a lot of problems adding value to their farm produce. This makes it difficult for them to realize greater returns from their hard work.”
Anthony’s passion to establish his company was ignited by his desire to design affordable and better machines to suit the needs of small and medium scale farmers.
He observed that the local market is flooded with poor quality, unreliable, and imported equipment that is prohibitively expensive for most farmers.
“We are currently in the process of registering our business with the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), as a Malawian Limited share company,” Anthony said.
“Our goal is to expand our products to neighboring countries such as Zambia, Mozambique, and Tanzania by 2035, and eventually export them to sub-Saharan countries and across the African continent.”
Anthony’s vision is not only to provide affordable agro-processing equipment but also to create jobs and stimulate economic growth.
His company has already employed three permanent and two temporary employees, and plans are underway to hire more staff with diverse skill sets.
“Generally, our mission is to drive agricultural mechanization in Malawi and beyond by providing better and more affordable machines than the imported models,” Anthony emphasized.
“We will also build a modern machine workshop in Lilongwe and have our own selling points in the three regions of this country and other countries to achieve optimal results.”
