Scorchers Land To Heroes Welcome

Malawi National Women’ Football Team landed home from a historical the 2026 Morocco Women Africa of Cup of Nations on Wednesday afternoon to the heroes welcome.

Led by the First Lady, Madame Getrude Mutharika, Chief Secretary Justin Saidi Cabinet ministers, government and sports officials, scores of ecstatic fans thronged Kamuzu International Airport.

The exceptional welcome was accorded to the Scorchers after their outstanding performance on their debutant Wafcon appearance in which they went on to reach the final and lost to Cameroon.

It was a befitting welcome for Malawi who beat Nigeria 3-2 in the opening Group C match saw off Egypt 3-1 to qualify for the quarters. In their quarterfinals they beat Ghana 2-1 and Algeria 3-1.

In an interview after touching down, Scorchers goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo applauded the fans, Cabinet ministers and the First Lady for a resounding welcome.

“We are excited for this arrangement as it has motivated us. We didnt expect us,” she said.

Deputy Director of Football in the ministry applauded the Scorchers feat, saying this should inspire the Flames to have confidence and self belief.

Auxilliary Bishop for Lilongwe Archdioce, who was in attendance, said the players had made Malawi proud.

After arrival, the Scorchers were treated to a military parade on their way to Sunbird Capital Hotel for a welcome party.
