Malawi National Women’s Football Team is set to make more history on their Women Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) maiden appearance against Ghana.
The Scorchers caused a sensation run after beating 10-time champions 3-2 and Egypt 3-1 in the Group C and qualified for the quarter-finals despite losing to Zambia 2-1.
In a prematch interview, coach Lovemore Fazili said a lot was stake in their 2026 Morocco Wafcon quarter-finals.
Fazili said victory would guarantee them World Cup qualifications.
“We are very prepared for the match. We are serious because there is a lot at stake. If we go through, it means we play at the World Cup finals next year. This is something everybody is looking for,” he said.
The Scorchers gaffer also disclosed that three key players Sabina Thom, Leticia Chinyamula and Madyina Nguluwe would miss the match through suspension for accumulating two yellow cards each.
But he downplayed the situation, saying this would not affect the game-plan with able replacements on call.
Malawi have played Ghana twice in friendly matches with a 3-1 and 4-0 losses in January and July respectively.
Meanwhile, National Bank of Malawi, official sponsor of Scorchers, has drummed up support by organising watch parties at Cafe 92 in Lilongwe and Linde Lounge and Grill in Mzuzu in which the patrons will enjoy a 20 percent discount on beer prices.
Before the expansion, Ghana had reached the semi-finals directly four times, but this will their consecutive quarter-finals spot after the format was changed.
