Malawi’s Scorchers made a dream start to their maiden Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with a dramatic 3-2 victory over defending champions Nigeria in Rabat, Morocco, on Tuesday.
The result is one of the biggest upsets in the tournament’s history, with the Scorchers overcoming Africa’s most successful women’s national team to announce their arrival on the continental stage in style.
After a tightly contested first half that ended goalless, Malawi broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute through captain Temwa Chawinga.
Her sister, Tabitha Chawinga, doubled the lead six minutes later, putting the Scorchers firmly in control.
Nigeria responded in stoppage time when captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted a penalty to reduce the deficit.
However, Temwa Chawinga quickly restored Malawi’s two-goal advantage by netting her second goal of the match, before Uchenna Kanu grabbed a late consolation for Nigeria.
Speaking after the match, Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili praised his players for their determination and discipline, saying the victory was a reward for the team’s hard work and belief.
He urged the squad to remain focused, stressing that the tournament is far from over.
The win hands Malawi three crucial points and places the Scorchers in a strong position in Group C as they pursue a place in the knockout stages.
They will next face Egypt before taking on regional rivals Zambia in their final group match.
