NGO BetaOrg spoils 4 churches with K17m donation

A non-governmental organisation BetaOrg has offered an early Christmas to four churches in Blantyre with a total donation of K17 million.

The organisation donated 25 hampers each to Machinjiri’s Mt Carmel and Nkolokosa-based St Columba CCAP churches, Malawi Assembles of God Berachah International Centre from Machinjiri and Light of Life Global Assembly in Limbe.

The organisation also put the icing on the cake with a K2 million cash donation to each of the church.

The hampers contained 5kg of maize flour, 1kg of sugar, 1kg of salt, 2 litres of Orange Squash, 1 litre cooking oil and soya pieces valued at K90,000 each.

During the donation, BetaOrg national director Bridget Mbeya said they donated to churches because they are in position to reach out to their targeted less-privileged.

She said: “We have been doing many initiatives in Malawi, but then we thought that we have many marginalised people in Malawi. But if you want to help them you cannot find them.”

“If you go out in the streets, you cannot know or locate them. Each and every person in Malawi, belong to a certain religion. So, we thought that we must go into churches and meet church elders so that they can give us names so that we can share with the less-privileged something for Christmas.”

Mbeya also defended the organisation’s decision to donate to churches in Blantyre, saying there are also less-privileged people living in urban areas.

Receiving the donation, St Columba CCAP Welfare Committee Magolah commended the organisation as it will contribute to their initiative to assist 135 members who are beneficiaries of the church’s quarterly donation.

On his part, Malawi Assemblies of God Berachah International Centre resident pastor Chris Suya said the church should not only feed their members with spiritual food but also meet their physical needs such as food.

Light of Life Global Assembly Church elder and acting administrator Eckson Kaime said every year during Christmas, the church gives out donation to the less-privileged.

BetaOrg will also make a similar donation to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.
