A Blantyre-based visual artist Chimwemwe Luwanda is set to introduce a Sip and Paint event, a social networking event that will bring people together.
Speaking with ProjectM in an interview, he said the main aim of the event is to provide fun and creative experience for participants where they can unwind, socialise and explore their artistic talents in a relaxed setting.
“Its a networking event for people to have fun and painting was chosen as the main activity because it’s accessible to both beginners and experienced artists, allowing everyone to express themselves creatively while following along with a guided tutorial,” said Luwanda.
The event will be taking place once a month basis and the first event of this kind was held on 14 April 2024 at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre.
“This will be a two-hour event and whether one is a beginner or experienced you will have an incredible experience because you will be guided accordingly,” he said.
Last month, Luwanda organised a solo exhibition aimed at celebrating nature’s palette and honouring nature’s beauty and advocating environmental conversation.
“Nature’s palette was all about celebrating and preserving the beauty of nature through art. We showcased the vibrant colours and textures found in nature in a bid to inspire a deep connection with the environment while fostering appreciation for the same,” he explained.
Luwanda said his idea to hold a solo exhibition on nature’s palette was inspired by his concern for environmental conservation and sustainability.
After sitting for Malawi School Certificate of Education he settled for being a visual artist.
“I have been involved in art for as long as I can remember. From a young age, I found joy and inspiration in expressing myself through various artistic mediums. Over the years, my passion for art has only grown stronger, driving me to explore different techniques and themes in my work,” he said.
Apart from being a visual artist, the artist is also an environmental advocate.
“The environment is a topic that is deeply personal to me. Growing up in Malawi, I believe that art has the power to transcend language and culture, serving as a universal language to convey messages of conservation and sustainability,” he said.
Luwanda is a holder of Malawi School Certificate Education obtained in 2019 at Jacaranda School of Arts.
The Sip and Paint event will come in four packages, ranging from K20,000 per person, K35,000 couple, K40,000 and K65,000.
