President Chakwera Calls for Unity in Cultural Diversity Promotion

President of the Republic of Malawi Dr Lazarus Chakwera has described cultural gatherings as vital in maintaining unity and peace among people.

Thd President made the remarks on Saturday evening at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe during a Chewa Heritage Foundation (CHEFO) Fundraising Dinner.

Addressing the gathering, Chakwera also underlined the need for the masses to continue respecting traditional leaders, saying they are custodians of culture.

He praised CHEFO for its unwavering resolve in preserving cultural heritage amid the growing influence of western culture.

“What we are witnessing today is an opportunity to connect with each other and most importantly, my opportunity as the president to connect with you,” he said.

Chakwera called for coexistence among the country’s cultural groups, saying peace it is important in propelling lives of people forward.

“As we celebrate, let us learn to live harmoniously with others from different backgrounds to ensure6 lasting peace in our country,” said Chakwera.

CHEFO Chairperson Stanley Khayira shared Chakwera’s sentiments, describing peace as vital for national development.

“That’s why unity and peace are among the foundation’s key priorities at the core of CHEFO’s work,” said Khayira.

He indicated that resources realised at the dinner will support the foundation in its drive to construct permanent CHEFO offices and a museum.

“Part of the resources will also support Malawian participants attending the Kulamba Ceremony in Zambia this year,” he added.
