Local artists have been implored to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship spirit as one way of monetising their talents.
NICO Group of companies Operations Executive, Chifundo Chiundira has made the appeal Friday in Mangochi during the closure of a two-day “Investment School of Creative Arts” workshop organized by the Copyright Fund under the Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA).
Addressing scores of artists, who gathered for the event, Chiundira underscored the need for the creative sector to move with time, saying in other countries, artists are earning rewards for their labour.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, time has come for musicians, play writers, poets, digital media content creators and others to earn a likeable living like we see in other countries,” he said.
Chiundira said NICO Group of companies is ready to continue supporting the country’s creative industry, saying it has potential.
“As NICO, we believe empowering you, artists might also translate to good business for us hence our continued support,” said Chiundira.
In his remarks, Copyright Fund Board Chairperson, Gibson Kapyepye called on artists to embrace the spirit of investment.
“As a fund, it is always our wish to see artists practicing fiscal discipline and create a brand which is marketable; hence, organising this workshop,” said Kapyepye.
During the workshop, artists were trained on how they can venture into profitable business deals, identify opportunities as well as threats to their business.
Deborah Ntopa, popularly known as Debbie in the music circles, described the training as an eye opener.
The Investment School of Creative Arts is being run with financial support from NICO Group of companies which has pumped in a sponsorship of K65 million.
Artists, who attended the function, included Musicians, Poets, Graphic designers, Fashion Designers, Professional Models and Comedians, just to mention a few.
