The Ministry of Tourism says churches in the country have an important role to play in the promotion of tourism.
Minister responsible, Dr Vera Kamtukule made the remarks Saturday in Lilongwe during the official opening of a state-of-the-art conference centre called “Diana Conference Center” built by New Life Mission church which is located at Mchezi, few kilometers from Kanengo industrial area.
Speaking during the function, Dr Kamtukule bemoaned a lack of proper investment in the tourism sector, urging the faith community to do more.
She commended New Life Mission church for building the multi-million kwacha facility, saying it will help in accommodating tourists.
“The facility you have built here is very magnificent and I believe tourists, including those coming from other countries will not have any problems lodging here,” she said.
The minister urged the church to run the facility professionally, adding that government is ready to offer support where necessary.
“For us as a ministry, this is a huge win because your win is our win and we wish you well,” said Kamtukule.
Speaking to ProjectM on the sidelines of the function, New Life Mission church minister, Reverend Robert Manda said they decided to build the conference facility as one way of diversifying its source of income.
“It is high time for churches to minimise squeezing the coffers of their faithful and start diversifying source of income,” said Manda.
Reverend Manda said the facility is open to the general public for use.
“We hope people will support us because we really need their support,” Manda added.
The magnificent conference centre has been built with support from an American couple, Mike and Deana Burkholder.
