Thirty six youths and women from Traditional Authority Chitukula in Lilongwe have received training in green skills and agroecology farming practices, thanks to an organisation called Youth Access For Success and Development (YASD).
The three-day training has, among others, equipped participants with knowledge on how they can manufacture Multiplier Organic fertiliser (Mbeya), Urine crystalized fertiliser and Tipindule organic fertilizer (Crystallised urine fertiliser).
YASD executive director Edward Chidombe Msiska has told ProjectM that the training was vital as it has equiped participants with cost-effective and eco-friendly methods that enrich soil, boost crop productivity and promote climate resilience.
“Through these trainings, we are not just training individuals, we are training change makers who will break socioeconomic barriers and create eco-friendly jobs out there,” he said.
Msiska said the training has also provided the participants with knowledge on how they can train others when they get back to their communities.
“We believe what we have done will fuel a green movement from the ground up,” said Msiska.
YASD said it would continue training more youths and women as the organisation strives to create sustainable farming solutions among local farmers.
“With every new skill, we are bringing Malawi 2063 vision closer to reality because we know that the future is green,” he added.
One of the participants, Michael Posiyano hailed the training, saying it will help him become independent financially.
“What I have learnt through this training is definitely what I needed to become self-reliant and I know it will happen,” said Posiyano.
YASD conducted the training with support from the IM Swedish Development Partner Southern Africa.
