Nkhotakota District Cricket Coordinator Stainbridge Paul Chirambo has encouraged people in the country to develop an interest in playing cricket, saying it is a sport for everybody.
In an interview, the Coordinator, who is also Cricket Association of Malawi executive committee member, said there was a misconception that cricket is a sport for the elite.
Chirambo said Cricket Association of Malawi launched an initiative to identify and nurture raw talent in schools.
“Cricket is a popular sport, which was introduced to 9 -14 years age group of school learners, but the problem was that most students did not have an interest to learn cricket,” he said.
Chirambo said the Cricket National Men Team ranks 51st in the world and 9th in Africa and for two consecutive two years, it qualified for Africa Cricket Tournament.
He said the National Cricket Women’s Team is ranked 45th in the world and 12th in Africa.
“Our national team participated in the Africa Cricket Tournament qualifiers. Currently, as the cricket association, we have plans to recruit mentors in schools. So far, we have managed to train 32 mentors in Nkhotakota district,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chirambo has asked government and private sector to sponsor cricket.
