Malawi’s renowned entrepreneur and motivational speaker Kondwani Kachamba Ngwira has said he has constructed 30 houses for Cyclone Freddy survivors in two months.
He said that he plans to build at least 100 houses within the year.
Ngwira told ProjectM that he has used his personal money and other financial assistance from well-wishers, faith groups, among others, to construct the houses.
He said each house cost about MK1.9 million, adding that some of these houses have been built in Chiradzulu, Phalombe, and other places where many families were displaced by Cyclone Freddy.
“I am happy that there is good reception and God is helping us as people are coming forward with various assistance such as cement, iron sheets and money to assist in the project. My intention is to build at least 400 houses in the next three years ideally to mitigate the challenges which our friends are facing following the cyclone-induced devastation in Southern Region,” Ngwira said.
He, however, called for collaborative and collective response towards his rebuilding efforts.
“Let us work together as Malawians to assist the needy and stay away from politics because we are fighting against an enemy that is Cyclone Freddy which has claimed many lives of our families and friends. With only K100 million we can build 50 houses and to achieve this we need to desist from corruption,” said Ngwira.
According to the Department Of Disaster Management Affairs and Economic Experts, Malawi will need US $900 million to recover from the devastation of Cyclone Freddy.
Tropical Cyclone Freddy made its landfall in the country on March 12 accompanied by heavy rainfall causing havoc on road, school, hospital, water and electricity infrastructure. It was displaced over 650,000 people while 1000 died.
