Madalitso Chimpeni, a young entrepreneur from Malawi, has taken a bold step towards addressing the country’s energy challenges.
As the CEO of Mpepu Energy, a company he founded, Chimpeni has designed and manufactured wind turbines to provide clean and sustainable energy to rural communities.
Chimpeni’s journey began in 2022, when he was inspired by self-motivation to create something that would make a positive impact on his community.
Despite being jobless at the time, he decided to take matters into his own hands and develop a solution to Malawi’s energy crisis.
“I wanted to do something that would benefit my community and create opportunities for myself,I saw the potential for wind energy in Malawi and decided to pursue it,” said Chimpeni.
His hard work and determination have paid off. He has designed and manufactured three wind turbines, each capable of producing enough power for five houses.
His innovative solution has earned him recognition and accolades, including awards from the Malawi University of Science and Technology and the United States.
This year, Chimpeni plans to deploy his wind turbines in a mini-grid project in Ntchisi, which will benefit 80 households. His long-term goal is to establish wind mini-grids in 50 different areas across Malawi, reaching over 2 million people within the next five years.
Chimpeni’s achievement is all the more remarkable given his background. A graduate of Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources with a degree in Biotechnology, Chimpeni has taken a non-traditional path to entrepreneurship.
For now, Chimpeni is working alone, but he hopes to expand his team and operations as his business grows.
