Blending Tradition with Modern Fashion

For many, the art of weaving may seem like a forgotten craft, a hobby for those seeking a more hands on, simpler life.

But for Alinafe Mapwesera, it is much more than that. It is a calling.

Based in Blantyre, Namiwawa, Mapwesera is making waves in the fashion industry with a unique blend of tradition and modern style.

As the founder of Moowe, a brand dedicated to sustainable woven bags, Alinafe is weaving a legacy of culture, creativity, and craftsmanship.

Alinafe told ProjectM that her journey into the world of basket weaving started with a love for fashion and handmade crafts.

She also runs Nanas Closet, a successful fashion brand, when she became inspired by the intricate art of local artisans creating woven goods using natural materials.

“I wanted to create something that connects our culture with modern fashion. Basket weaving is a skill that has been passed down through generations and I saw an opportunity to make it stylish while keeping it sustainable,” she said.

Alinafe’s designs are heavily influenced by traditional techniques and the symbolism behind them. One of her favorite inspirations comes from the meaning of ‘Ihomwe, Moowe,’ which translates to the deep love of a mother,” she said.

As a creative entrepreneur, Alinafe’s passion for weaving goes beyond just making beautiful bags. She envisions growing Moowe into a global brand by expanding the use of natural materials and collaborating with more artisans.

“I want to introduce new designs and work with more artisans to expand our reach worldwide. There is so much potential to showcase the richness of our culture through fashion,” she said.

For those interested in learning basket weaving, Alinafe has a simple yet powerful piece of advice.

“Be patient and practice. Learn from skilled artisans and never be afraid to experiment with new ideas. Every woven piece tells a story, so put your heart into your work.”

In today’s digital world, handmade crafts are finding a new audience, thanks to social media and online platforms.

“Social media and online shops make it easier to sell handmade items worldwide. More people now appreciate the value of handmade and sustainable products, which is great for businesses like ours,” she explains.
