Tevet Launches Free Training for Karonga Youths

In a bid to empower young people with skills and knowledge, the Technical, Entrepreneurial, Vocational and Education Training (TEVET) Authority has launched a four-month free vocational training programme in hard-to-reach areas in Karonga.

The programme, which was launched at Iponga Primary School, aims to equip 242 young people from Ngana, Iponga, and Mwakaboko with marketable skills in areas such as bricklaying, carpentry, cosmetology and electrical installation.

According to TEVET Authority’s Northern Regional Service Centre Manager, Joseph Chikopa, the programme is designed to bridge the gap in access to education and job opportunities, promoting inclusivity and equity.

“We are committed to providing young people with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in these tough economic times,” said Chikopa.

One of the beneficiaries, 22-year-old Emily Nkhata from Iponga, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity.

“I am excited to learn new skills and start my own business after completing the training,” said Nkhata.

Karonga District Council Vice-Chairperson Kings Mvula hailed the initiative, saying it will help reduce the number of young people migrating to neighbouring country, Tanzania in search of work.

“This programme is a game-changer for our young people. It will equip them with the skills they need to succeed and reduce poverty in our district,” said Mvula.

The programme is part of TEVET Authority’s efforts to promote vocational training and skills development in Malawi.
