Innovatech Engineering Services, a business born out of necessity and determination, has rapidly grown into a trusted name in the field of welding, fabrication, and carpentry in Kauma, Lilongwe.
The company, founded by 30-year-old Yamikani Thomas, is now a go-to provider for a range of steel and wooden products, including kiosks, roofing, windows, gates, coffee tables, kitchen units, and more.
Thomas, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering he told ProjectM that starting up was tough.
Innovatech is thriving, the company now owns four welding machines, six grinders, and employs two permanent workers.
It has built a solid reputation, particularly in the production of kiosks, with seven made specifically for Airtel Money branches and two for Airtel Money agents.
“There was time my friend who works at tnm wanted me to maintain some of the damaged kiosks. They brought one of the kiosk at my workshop to work on it as a sample. Unfortunately some of the bosses didn’t approve that project. The kiosk is still at our workshop they haven’t collected it up to date”, he said.
“But I’m grateful to my friend Burnet Msume, who works at Airtel. Whenever someone wants to open an Airtel Money branch, he refers them to me for the kiosks. It’s been a game-changer for my business.” he said.
However, like many businesses, Innovatech faces challenges. Price instability and scarcity of materials are ongoing issues, and these sometimes impact profit margins.
“Material costs are always fluctuating, you can write a quotation today, but when you go to buy the materials the next day, the prices may have gone up. It’s tough, especially when clients don’t understand that we can’t always absorb those extra costs.” he said.
Despite these challenges, Innovatech continues to expand its product range, from steel roofing and doors to bedroom furniture and dining sets.
Thomas has one key piece of advice for the youth, “never give up on your dreams. It may take time, and you might think you’re lagging behind others, but if you keep working on your dream, you’ll get there. I started with nothing, and now I’m proud of how far we’ve come.”
As Innovatech Engineering Services looks to the future, Thomas is focused on continued growth.
“We’re aiming to serve more clients and expand into other areas. We’re committed to delivering high-quality work and being a reliable partner to businesses and individuals alike.”
Burnet Msume had this to say about when he visited his work station to appreciate the progress of his kiosk order.
“I had doubts about you guys but this is beyond what i wanted. I will give you all your money in advance just let me know when you are done and I can’t wait for the final product”, he said.
