Concern Worldwide is empowering the communities to manage finances in the implementation of projects through the Zurich Project initiative which is bearing fruits in Nsanje.
Area Disaster Risk Management Committee Chair for Traditional Authority Malemia, Arnold Ben said empowering people in the communities has brought transparency and accountability to people in the management of finances.
He told ProjectM that the communities received K8 million for the construction of dyke to protect four villages which were affected by floods.
Ben said the construction works of the dyke is three hundred meters which if completed will protect people of Thole, Hapalikusala, Yohane and others.
“So far, we have done 140 meters of the 300 meters, unfortunately, we have run out of the resources,” he said.
But he is optimistic that they will finish the remaining 160 metres.
On his part, the National Coordinator for Concern Worldwide, Tomy Chimpazi said his organization with support from Zurich Project is piloting the Communities Disaster Risk Management which is providing funds direct to the local people to manage themselves.
He revealed that during the second phase of the initiative Zurich Project is pumping Euros 2.5 million for 2025.
According to Chimpazi Zurich Project initiative is being implemented in the three districts of Nsanje, Chikwawa and Lilongwe which is going to run up to 2035.
