The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has expressed its delight over the nomination of Tionge Mtambo, a Headteacher at Tondola Primary School in Chitipa, for the prestigious Global Teacher Prize 2025.
According to Mphatso Mkuonera, spokesperson for the Ministry, Mtambo’s nomination is a testament to the hard work and dedication of Malawian teachers.
“We are thrilled that Mtambo has put Malawi on the map,” Mkuonera said.
Mtambo’s nomination is not only a personal achievement but also a recognition of the country’s education sector.
The Global Teacher Prize aims to highlight the critical role of education and appreciate the transformative impact that teachers have on the lives of young people worldwide.
As the only Malawian teacher to be nominated for the award, Mtambo’s recognition underscores the potential of young female educators in the country to make significant contributions to the education sector both locally and globally.
“Being the only Malawian teacher to be nominated for the award, am humbled by the recognition,the nomination is not just about me, but about all the dedicated teachers in Malawi who work tirelessly to provide quality education to our children,” she said.
Mtambo’s advocacy for girls’ education has also been recognized, with transforming her home into a makeshift boarding facility to support girls in focusing on their studies.
“I believe that education is the key to unlocking the potential of our girls and empowering them to become leaders in their communities,” emphasized Mtambo.
The winner of the Global Teacher Prize will receive a grand prize of $1 million (approximately K1.78 billion).
The Global Teacher Prize is a Varkey Foundation initiative held in collaboration with UNESCO, aiming to recognize and celebrate the impact of exceptional teachers worldwide. The winner will be chosen from the top 10 finalists, to be announced later, and will receive the award at the World Governments Summit in Dubai.
