Mzuzu Entrepreneur Rises From Humble Beginnings

In the heart of the city of Mzuzu, Ibrahim Silaju’s inspiring journey from a humble salesman to a prominent scrap metal dealer is a testimony to determination and hard work.

According to Silaju, entrepreneurial spirit led him to explore new opportunities beyond selling spare parts at Vigwagwa Market.

He identified a gap in the scrap metal business and seized it, buying old, discarded vehicles from surrounding areas and turning them into valuable resources.

“I saw potential in the scrap metal business, people were discarding old vehicles, and I knew I could turn them into valuable resources,” he said.

Through hard work and dedication, Silaju’s business flourished. He employed a team to assist with dismantling and the processing scrap metal, metal cutting, crushing and established relationships with local manufacturers, supplying raw materials.

Silaju’s scrap metal business today is a powerhouse, he has employed over 20 people, supporting local economies through job creation, and contributing to environmental sustainability by recycling waste.

“Ibrahim’s success inspires us a lot, it demonstrates that with perseverance, anyone can achieve greatness, for the fact that we have seen him where he is coming from,” said one of his fellow vendors Salome Chiumia.

Meanwhile, Silaju explained that his secrets to success include hard work and dedication, building strong relationships with suppliers and customers and continuous learning and adaptation.

As he looks to the future, Silaju plans to expand his business, exploring new markets and technologies.

“I want to create more opportunities for my community,” said Silaju.
