Young Innovator Seeks Help To Launch Community Radio Station

Lilongwe-based young innovator Precious Chagwa, who few weeks ago mesmerised Malawians for developing a device capable of transmitting radio waves has called on well-wishers to help him set up a functional radio station.

Chagwa, based in Nkhoma on the outskirts of Lilongwe city says he has already assembled a set of radio system capable of transmitting radio waves to a maximum radius of 2 kilometetres.

The Nkhoma Community Day Secondary School student is urging Malawians of goodwill to help him with finances to finish his project.

He challenge said if properly installed his radio would greatly help in bridging information gap currently existing in his community.

“All I need from well-wishers is the financial help and of course technical-know-how of how I can push my talent further,” he said.

Chagwa’s ingenious creation, assembled using scraps from broken radios, has left his peers in awe, longing to see it working.

“Currently, I know that people in my community are eager to hear more,” said Chagwa.

In a bid to do things the right way, the innovator has also called on well-wishers with expertise to help him apply for a radio licence.

“I have heard in the past of people getting arrested because of this and I don’t want to face the same scenario,” he said.

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) guidelines obtained on its website states that licensing of broadcasting services is determined by the need for such services in a specific area after conducting a research.

“MACRA then invites applications from the general public through the press and government gazette for the provision of the services. The successful bidder is announced after the evaluation process,” MACRA indicates on its website.

Meanwhile, Lilongwe-based media expert Innocent Kabango has called on relevant authorities to assist the innovator.
