Nkosi, A genius man – Made electricity in Mzimba district

As the country commemorated World Environmental Day, ProjectM engaged with Colrerd Nkosi from Yobe Nkosi Village, Traditional Authority Kampingo Sibande in Mzimba district, who is advancing clean energy by conserving the environment while at the same time supplying electricity in his home village.

Currently, Nkosi who invented Kasangazi Hydro Power Project made from scrap metals in a journey of more than 14 years says passion and persistent has made his dream come true.

“I usually got upset looking at the nearest river which has constant heavy water flow but there was no use relating to the river. Therefore, this prompted me to think of an idea which later sparkled something that will be in return generating electricity. I started with bycles paddles, dynamos and the old maize Sheller which creates a powerful turbine.” Said Nkosi.

He told ProjectM that he has supplied electricity to more than 30 households around his community through his 300 kilowatts grid and also managed to connect electricity to the nearest primary school where students are using the locally made electricity.

He said; “Electricity connection is still a challenge for most households especially in rural areas where if innovations like these are empowered, we could ease the pressure of government through Electricity Cooperation of Malawi (ESCOM) in the connection process. I use an old fridge compressor which is connected to the system and power is carried through still wires which I personally purchase and built.”

Nkosi who said has in born talent in areas of electricity, further alluded that his main mission is to promote clean energy since the coming of electricity will refrain people from his community in the wanton cutting down of trees for charcoal and firewood among others.

While calling for financial support from well-wishers, Nkosi said he hopes to connect more households in nearby communities surrounding his village.

In 2021, The Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources also toured his locally invented hydroelectricity project.

Nkosi is on 0888998524 for any further details and assistance.
