The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) has started distributing relief maize under the Lean Season targeting 36,904 households in Nsanje.
The launch of the distribution was at Magoma Primary School in the area of Traditional Authority Ngabu in the district.
Disaster Management Officer (DMO) for Nsanje, Dan Mandala said his office has started with the hard-to-reach areas.
Mandala told ProjectM that Traditional Authority Ngabu has 1,719 households of which 506 have received their relief maize.
“The remaining 1,413 families will receive their relief grain soon after this distribution,” he said.
On the Unified Beneficiary Registry (UBR), the DMO said the system was introduced in 2021 aimed at the identification of the beneficiaries of various governments programs.
Mandala revealed that DODMA identifies the people who are to receive the relief supplies but it only uses the names it is furnished with.
“We only use the names given from the district council,” he added.
Earlier Traditional Authority Ngabu has thanked the government for coming to the rescue to his subjects with the grain.
He said the effects of the climate change has negatively affected the harvest in the previous growing season.
According to the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report says a population of 5.7 million are food insecure in the country.
