World Bank, through the Governance to Enable Services Delivery (GESD) has constructed a primary school in Nsanje.
Headteacher for Zibahwe, Macwell Zuze said before the institution learners were walking long distances to Chilimba Catholic Primary School or Mlonda Primary School for them to learn.
He told ProjectM that most learners from the area started school at an older age which forced them not to complete primary education.
The headteacher also said because of the long distance, it forced some to drop out of school.
“We are very grateful to the government for bringing the school to the area,” he said.
Senior Group VillageHead Kalonga, who has relocated from Makhanga Island, said the school has assisted children who found it difficult to travel long distances.
However, she appealed authorities to consider turning Zibahwe Junior Primary School to Full Primary School, saying some children, especially those in Standards 6, 7 and 8 are the victims of travelling long distances.
Nsanje District Council Spokesperson Robert Nayeja said there are a number of projects in the district which are GESD funding.
“This primary school is one of the projects which is curbing the walk children used to travel to get education,” her said.
Zibahwe Primary School opened its doors in the 2023/24 academic year and has an enrollment of 467 learners against 5 teachers of which one is a female.
