In what has been described as a spirit of love, the Zomba City Africa Evangelical Church (A.E.C) has donated assorted items worth MK1.5 Million to 48 households that were displaced by cyclone Freddy in March 2023 and are currently seeking shelter in designated safe areas of Nswaswa and Nachuma 1 in Traditional Authority, Chikowi in the district.
However, survivors of the cyclone Freddy received food and nonfood items such as maize flour, soya pieces, sugar, soap, water buckets as well as blankets.
Speaking when he made a symbolic presentation of the relief items on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at Nachuma 1 and Nswaswa evacuation camps, Pastor Thaulo Nyamithambo told ProjectM that, apart from preaching the word of God the church has a great role to play in assisting government by covering the immediate needs in the nick of time.
Pastor Nyamithambo touched base on what Jesus did on Mark 8:1-8 when He felt compassionate to thousands of people who came to listen to the word of God and gave them food to eat when they were hungry adding that in times of trouble people need to come together and assist one another despite sharing different denominations.
“As a church We are very much committed to assisting people who were displaced by the devastating effects of cyclone Freddy and we will continue rendering a selfless and noble service to the national grief. We have also urged people living in areas identified to be highly susceptible to these hazards to move to safer places to avoid similar incidents,” said Nyamithambo.
One of the beneficiaries at Nachuma 1 evacuation camp, John Chiwaya thanked the church for the donation saying it has come at a time when many people in the area are in need of help.
And on the other hand, Esther Kapeni from Nswaswa area has commended the church for the assistance and has also urged people of good will to come to their rescue as most of the people lost their properties.
Triggered by heavy rains, tropical storm Freddy which originated from Madagascar made its second landfall in Mozambique on march 11, 2023 then entered Malawi on March 12 through Nsanje district and struck southern part of the country with full force killing many people and displaced thousands in districts like Blantyre, Nsanje, Chikwawa, Phalombe, Zomba, Mneno, Mwanza and many more
