Lilongwe based youth-led organization, Youth Action For Success and Development (YASD) has partnered with the Wakawaka market committee based in Area 36, a strategic partnership which aims to collect waste products and recycle them into reusable materials.
The strategic partnership has been launched Saturday, with a cleanup exercise that saw a large part of the market being cleaned.
YASD executive director, Edward Chidombe Msiska says the partnership will see concerned stakeholders collect waste products, which will then be carefully sorted and recycled into reusable materials such as compost manure and wrist bands.
“We are excited to partner with the Wakawaka market committee to promote the spirit of recycling and keep our environment clean,” Msiska said.
Msiska said the initiative, which is being implemented with support from the IM Swedish Development Partner Southern Africa through a project called Local Green Innovation Project, is not only good for the environment, but also good for market users who will have a chance to earn a living through the collection and sale of recyclable materials.
“What we have done here today is instilling the spirit of recycling in people so that they should start treating waste products as gold,” said Msiska.
Wakakawaka market chairperson, Matias Jiya hailed YASD for coming up with the initiative, promising to continue with the exercise.
“We are grateful to YASD for partnering with us to promote recycling and keep our market clean,” said Jiya.
Waste products collected on the day have been transported to Mtandile township where it will be recycled into eco-friendly products such as fire briquettes and organic fertilizers
YASD is implementing similar initiatives in Dedza district, a development that has seen hundreds of people embracing the spirit of recycling.
