RECYCLING ORGANIC WASTE INTO BRIQUETTES

Mwai Sulaimana, a 30-year-old University of Livingstonia graduate, has pioneered an innovative project combating environmental degradation and climate change.

His Mapepala Briquette Project transforms recycled organic waste into eco-friendly briquettes, providing a cleaner alternative to traditional charcoal.

Sulaimana, holding a degree in Food Security and Nutrition, explained, “These briquettes are made from compressed organic waste, including papers and cartons, offering an affordable and sustainable alternative to traditional charcoal. They burn longer, hotter, and produce more heat, making them cost-effective.”

The project addresses deforestation, promotes waste management, and encourages recycling.

Despite facing challenges, including limited paper supply, machinery constraints, and bureaucratic delays, Sulaimana produces 150 briquettes daily.

Sulaimana`s customers praise the briquettes’ efficiency.

Mervin Piringu from Malosa, Zomba, noted, “They’re cost-effective and maintain a consistent temperature.”

And Raelo Lajab from Sadzi-Mpunga, Traditional Authority Chikowi, Zomba, added, “They burn two to three times longer than wood charcoal and produce minimal smoke.”

Sulaimana’s initiative aims to promote environmental awareness and sustainability nationwide.
