It is a season for Malawi women Football and Malawians can’t help it but boast of such unique talents.
Just when the news about the Scorchers’ victory was still making rounds, Malawians are also celebrating another Scorchers victory as Malawi Women’s National Football their captain Tabitha Chawinga has been ranked on position 16 during the Ballon d’Or Awards in Paris, France.
Chawinga is the first Malawian footballer to be nominated for such award.
The nomination saw her rubbing shoulders with global stars such as Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba and she was also interviewed by global media.
Tabitha was also one of the two African footballers on the list alongside Zambian star Barbara Banda.
This also marks the third consecutive year that African players have been nominated for the award and the first time for African players to be included in the top 30 list.
Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala received nominations in the 2022 and 2023 on position 16 and 20, respectively.
Chawinga was outstanding for Paris Saint-Germain during the 2023-2024 season, scoring 19 goals and providing 10 assists to finish as the Premiere League top scorer.
She also scored six goals in the UEFA Women’s Champions League as PSG reached semi-finals and scored another 4 goals in the Coupe de France Feminine which PSG won.
Chawinga is currently playing for French based Lyonnaise Feminine.
Chawinga joined Malawi national football team as the age of 15 where she scored many goals.
In 2014, Chawinga joined Sweden based Kvarnsvedens marking the beginning of her professional career and later joined Jiangsu Suning in 2020.
Meanwhile, her sister Temwa Chawinga is also the talk of the town as she is leading the National Women’s Soccer League with 20 goals in 21 games played.
