MALAWI’S CERAMIC INDUSTRY GETS A LOCAL BOOST

Lilongwe-based talented entrepreneur, Titus Tsilizani Malakwa has taken the ceramic industry by storm after launching production of ceramic products using locally sourced materials.

Malakwa’s innovative approach has resulted in production of high-quality ceramic products such as plates, cups, tiles and toilet seats, just to mention a few.

He has told ProjectM that his passion for innovation prompted him to explore ceramic production.

“In other words, I saw an opportunity to create income and reduce the country’s over-reliance on ceramic products import,” Malakwa said.

He said his products are quickly gaining popularity on the local market.

“Feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive than I anticipated when I was starting this initiative late last year,” said Malakwa.

The innovator utilities locally available resources such as clay and kaolin to create his ceramic products.

It’s production process involves the artisan carefully mixing the raw materials which are then moulded into the above mentioned products.

Currently, the products are being sold by Malakwa alone, with plans at an advanced stage to start distributing at an industrial scale.

Ceramic expert Chifuno Stevens has hailed Malakwa for venturing in an industry she said has the potential to save the country millions in in forex previously spent on imports.

“And his success may also promote the country’s economic growth,” said Stevens.

His goal is to expand production capacity, explore regional markets and create employment
