IIIovo Sugar Malawi Managing Director Lekani Katandula has been appointed as the new Chief Financial Officer for ABF Sugar at the group’s central office in the UK.
This promotion follows his outstanding achievements as Managing Director of Illovo Sugar Malawi, a position he held since April 2020.
According to a press statement signed by Olive Kawelama, Communications and Stakeholder Manager for Ilovo Sugar Malawi, Katandula has been praised for his remarkable achievement despite the economic turmoil that have been there.
She said: “Under his stewardship Illovo Malawi has achieved a significant milestone despite challenges faced by external factors and climatic events. His vision has guided the company in turbulent times with a focus of creating a thriving community through the provision of food and energy.
“He served Illovo Sugar Malawi with distinction, demonstrating outstanding leadership and a deep commitment to the company’s success.”
Meanwhile, Bertha Chikadza, Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA) president has hailed Katandula for this remarkable achievement.
She said: “Mr. Katandula’s appointment highlights Malawi’s intellectual talent. These are the positive news the country needs to hear indicating that despite the volatile business environment, some still strive, profit and excel regardless.
“As a country, we celebrate export quality expertise and we are proud of him.”
Katandula also served at Phoenix International Primary School, as Chairman-Trustees Board from 2017 to 2019, Malawi Telecommunications Ltd, as Non-Executive Director, First Capital Bank plc, as Non-Executive Director from 2017 to 2022.
Ethanol Co. Ltd., as Non-Executive Director, Alliance Capital Ltd., as Director, Sucoma Group Pension Scheme, as Director, and Deloitte as a Professional Practice Director for Deloitte Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe Partner.
Katandula received his Masters Business Admin degree from the University of Bradford and undergraduate degree from the University of Malawi.
The new role is effectice 1 January 2025 and ABF Sugar, part of Associated British Foods, is the global sugar division overseeing Illovo Sugar Malawi.
