Amid the continued scarcity of jobs on the job market, Mzuzu-based food scientist, Maggie Njera has chosen a different path by venturing into entrepreneurship.
Njera has launched a company called “Njera Food Processors” which specializes in the production of nutritious soy-oriented porridge flour called Soya Phala.
She has told ProjectM in an interview that Soya Phala is carefully prepared using local methods to preserve nutritional value of the final product.
Among others, the production process involves the procurement of raw materials such as soya beans, groundnuts and beans which are then carefully sorted and milled to form a nutritious soy-dominated flour.
“Our product is not just another soya flour you can find on the market, ours is carefully prepared to return it’s protein needs,” said Njera.
Her wish to see Malawians eating affordable nutritious food is said to have prompted Njera to establish the company.
“Apart from being an entrepreneur, it has also always been my dream to contribute in the well-being of Malawians especially children who mostly need nutritious products like our flour,” said Njera.
Currently, Njera Food Processors has 4 permanent employees and numerous distributors.
Soya Phala product is being sold in various chain stores across the Northern Region of the country and other selected shops in the central region.
“We are planning to expand soon so that our product can penetrate the local market,” she added.
Njera’s exploits has already received recognition from the Mzuzu City Council, which through its Chief Executive Officer Gomezgani Nyasulu, has promised to aid the growth of her company.
“We need youths to pursue entreprenuership and as a council we are ready to support them,” said Nyasulu.
