In the heart of Blantyre, a remarkable journey unfolds. Isaac Osman, popularly known as Jomo, is a beacon of hope and inspiration.
He is the deputy mayor of Malawi’s commercial city of Blantyre.
Having once roamed the streets without a classmate, he embodies the belief that anyone can rise above their circumstances.
“Believe that you can make it in life, and you will make it,” he proclaims, channeling the spirit of resilience that drives his mission to help others.
Jomo’s story is one of transformation. From a childhood spent navigating the challenges of the streets, he has become a successful football team owner and a dedicated Councilor.
His journey is proof that change is possible and he is committed to helping others, in the same situation he had to follow a similar path.
Every Monday at noon, the Kamuzu Stadium serves as a gathering place for Jomo and a group of passionate individuals who share his vision. Together, they offer guidance and counseling to about 45 street kids, nurturing their dreams and aspirations. In their shared belief in the power of education and skill development, they have already seen progress. Four street kids, aged 11 to 14, have been sent back to school, with Jomo personally taking responsibility for their educational needs.
Among the street-connected kids, three have expressed interest in spray painting, and K Motors has stepped in to provide training. This initiative not only equips the kids with a valuable skill but also ignites a sense of purpose and direction in their lives.
Jomo, who got his name from South Africa football legend and owner, sponsor and coach of Jomo Cosmos, once the country’s top-flight league side, understands that empowering these young minds requires more than just education; it necessitates imparting practical skills that can lead to sustainable livelihoods.
As he meets with the kids, Jomo prioritises their voices, asking them what skills they wish to learn and how they envision their futures. This approach fosters self-empowerment and builds a sense of ownership among the kids regarding their paths to success.
Many have expressed interest in starting their own businesses, and Jomo is actively seeking support to provide business top-ups to help them realize their entrepreneurial dreams.
With every step he takes, Jomo calls on the residents of Blantyre to join him in this mission. He believes that collective action is essential in addressing the challenges faced by street kids. By offering guidance, support, and opportunities, they can minimise the cases of theft and foster a community where everyone has a chance to thrive.
In a world where many overlook the potential of street kids, Jomo stands firm in his conviction that change is possible. Through his efforts, he is not only transforming lives but also reshaping the narrative around the youth in Blantyre.
Together, with unwavering support from the community, Jomo and his team are laying the groundwork for a brighter, more hopeful future for these children, one where dreams are within reach and resilience reigns supreme.
