Mangochi-based woman Chrissy Makombe is breaking gender barriers after she successfully set up a motorcycle and bicycle taxi business which is mostly dominated by men.
The 44-year-old is the founder and owner of the taxi business which has thrived into a profitable enterprise.
She has told ProjectM that her business adventure began in 2014 with very few bicycles.
“Using the profit I was getting from the bicycle taxi business, I managed to purchase motorcycles that boasted my business immensely,” Makombe said.
From 2021, the entrepreneur decided to take a risk by borrowing money amounting to K500,000 which she invested in her business.
“The investment paid off as I was able to repay the loan in time and managed to purchase extra motorcycles and bicycles,” said Makombe.
Currently, her collection includes over a dozen motorcycles and over 20 bicycles that normally operate around Mangochi Municipality.
Through the business, Makombe has managed to purchase plots and household materials.
On a good day, her business brings in over K60,000.
“I have also managed to create employment opportunities as the people who operate these motorcycles and bicycles are paid by me,” She added.
Her vision is to see the business expanding in other districts across Malawi.
Women rights activist Memory Ngosi has commended Makombe for venturing into what she described as a male dominated business sector.
